LoRaWAN™ is a media access control layer protocol for wide area networks. It is designed to allow low-powered devices to communicate within the concept of IoT over long range wireless connections. This uses an open or unlicensed frequency-spectrum.

SIGFOX™ is a cellular technology, to provide low power, low cost, and low data rate communications for devices connected remotely. In view of the low data rates used for IoT connections, the SIGFOX™ network uses Ultra-Narrow Band, UNB technology. The SIGFOX™ radio frequency is unlicensed, like LoRaWAN™. The SIGFOX™ network topology has been designed as a scalable, high-capacity network, with very low energy consumption.


NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) is a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) radio technology standard developed to enable a wide range of devices and services to be connected using cellular telecommunications bands. WebSockets represent a standard for bi-directional real time communication between servers and clients. Firstly, in web browsers, but ultimately between any server and any client. functionality that works consistently across multiple platforms.

LoRa Technology

A Semtech innovation, LoRa Technology offers a very compelling mix of long range, low power consumption and secure data transmission. Public and private networks using this technology can provide coverage that is greater in range compared to that of existing cellular networks. It is easy to plug into the existing infrastructure and offers a solution to serve battery-operated IoT applications. Semtech builds LoRa Technology into its chipsets. These chipsets are then built into the products offered by our vast network of IoT partners and integrated into LPWANs from mobile network operators worldwide. LoRa uses license-free sub Gigahertz radio frequency bands like 169 MHz, 433 MHz, 868 MHz (Europe) and 915 MHz (North America).

It connects to a large quantity of low power, low cost devices with deep indoor penetration. It operates not in ISM but in a licensed spectrum, as NB-IoT is based on 3GPP standards. It connects devices efficiently and handles small amounts of infrequent 2-way data, securely and reliably.


SIGFOX™ is a french company enrolling a worldwide LPWAN. They use a cellular technology, to provide low power, low cost, and low data rate communications for devices connected remotely. Near Field Communication (NFC)

Near Field Communication Technology allows interaction between devices on a small territory. The battery lifetime of these devices is not as long as for LPWAN devices, but the size of the data, that can be transmitted is slightly higher. Most important technologies in the Near Field Communication are: WIFI, Bluetooth, Zigbee, RFID. The NFC standard has three modes of operation: the peer-to-peer mode that lets two smartphones swap data, a read/write mode in which one active device picks up info from a passive one, and card emulation, in which an NFC device such as a smartphone can be used like a contactless credit card. It operates within a radius of about 4 cm and provides a wireless connection between your device and another.
