Why is LPWAN the “goto” technology for smart solution deployments?

It is a known fact that only a small number of IoT devices can be connected with cellular networks. WiFi and BTLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) serve some applications well, however one cannot connect moisture sensors for agriculture with WiFi. For use cases which cannot be measured with the prevailing RF technologies, LPWAN is the “goto” technology. Due to its inherent long range and low power characteristics for IoT applications. LPWAN technologies ensure easy deployment, thousands of connections per gateway and long battery life.

What are the target applications for LPWAN?

IoT applications for LPWAN technology need a long battery life to enable 'fit and forget' or disposable end devices, a low-cost sensor, and long range connectivity. The applications where LPWAN's are applicable is endless, at DIGIMONDO we are mainly focusing on the applications driving current network deployments in the areas of Smart City, Carriers, Industry 4.0 and intelligent housing buildings.

Are LoRaWAN™ radiations harmful?

As with other radio-based technologies, LoRaWAN™ transmits signals over the air, through earth and even across concrete. Even after its strong penetration power, the radiation level of LoRaWAN™ is lesser than that of the prevailing mobile technology radiations.
The radiations from sensors of the LoRa technology reach the level of a conventional WLAN router at maximum transmission power, are half (50%) of a 4G-enabled smartphone and (5%) from a GSM mobile phone.

What are the main LPWAN technologies?

The most prevailing LPWAN technologies are: LoRaWAN™, Sigfox and NB-IoT.

Is LoRa only for wide area networks?

No, it’s not. LoRaWAN™ as a protocol is strictly for wide-area networks, but LoRa as a lower-level physical layer technology (PHY) can be used in all sorts of applications outside of wide area.

What is LPWAN best suited for?

LPWAN is the best fit technology for IoT and M2M requirements. The characteristics of LPWAN is unique as compared to other existing RF technologies.

What are the unique characteristics of LPWAN?

Long Range: The distance of the end node to the gateway can be up to 10 kilometers, which makes it a great fit for long range communication.

Data transfer rate: Upload and download of data packets at 300 bps to 50 Kbps

Low Power consumption: The battery life of the device lasts up to 10 years, and sometime more.

How secure is LoRa?

Any communication technology dealing with many connected nodes need robust end-to-end security. LoRa achieves this by implementing security at two different layers:

  • One for the network
  • One for the application
Network security ensures authenticity of the node in the network and application security ensures the operator does not have access to end user’s application data. LoRa uses AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) security keys. To achieve the required levels of security for LoRa networks, several layers of encryption have been employed:
  • Unique Network key (EUI64) and ensure security on network level
  • Unique Application key (EUI64) ensure end to end security on application level
  • Device specific key (EUI128)
What is firefly?

firefly is the core network server for managing DIGIMONDO’s LoRaWANTM network.

In addition, the firefly cloud offers easy provisioning of objects and secure data storage, according to IT-security laws for data integrity and data security.

The data access is realized through a web application. It allows secured and fast access from all over the world.

What are the system requirements to access firefly?

A working internet connection

firefly is compatible with browsers such as Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari

JavaScript, cookies and web sockets should be activated to run firefly.

What is niota?

DIGIMONDO’s product niota is a cloud-based one hand solution, which has the capability to collate data from different LPWAN technologies and translate them into easy to understand information for the end user. niota provides connectivity to IT systems on your premise like SAP (R/3 or HANA), MS Azure, Siemens Energy IP and many more.
